Need advices to guide someone to improve health conditions to avoid heart disease without hurting feeling?

January 11, 2011 - 12:25 pm 1 Comment

At least 5 people I knew had stent procedures and/or bypass surgeries last month. Correct someone to drop extreme high cholesterol foods and taking medicine to control blood pressure is a difficult task sometime to fight this disease that they often dont want to become any part of the criticized object. Very appreciate any successful experience and ideas.

Changing one’s diet and exercise patterns are the best way to reduce heart attack risk, but these take a lot of commitment. You cannot do it for them, no matter how much you might want to. What you might be able to do is do it WITH them. For example, if the person needs to diet, which is common, try doing it at the same time. This usually means avoiding sweets — no cookies, cakes, candy, or ice cream. Also, to bring down high blood pressure, a person usually needs to lower their dietary sodium, which means less salt. This is often the hardest thing to get used to. You can buy foods with artificial sweeteners that still taste sweet. But there is no real substitute for salt. It is best to "bite the bullet" and just do without. It’s hard at first, but you do get used to it after awhile. Then your taste buds revive and you begin to notice all the subtle flavors that you never noticed before. You must be patient, though. Buy the American Heart Association cook book to help with guidelines on fats, sugar, salt, and cholesterol. Dieting with someone is always less burdensome than doing it alone, because you can encourage each other, tell each other, "You’re doing great! Keep up the good work!" And reward each successful week on the diet by going to a movie — or something else you enjoy that doesn’t involve food.

In New Zealand and Australia- what are the health conditions that the general public get screened for?

January 4, 2011 - 7:38 am 1 Comment

I know about WHO guidelines, and am after a complete list if any1 knows thanks!

Pregnant women are always screened for HIV, Hep B and C, syphilus, rubella immunization, gestational diabetes, and various other tests at the doctors discretion.
Newborn babies always have ‘Guthrie’ test to check for various inherited disorders like PKU, cystic fibrosis, congenital hypothyroidism etc.
All women have free pap smears (for cervical cancer) and mammograms (over 40) available to them.
If you want to migrate here, you will be checked for things like TB.
All men over 40 are encouraged to have regular PSA’s (prostate specific antigen) to check for prostate cancer.

Basically, if you go to a doctor you will be screened for anything they think you might have (clinically suspected/family history etc.) Medicare covers most things in Australia.

What kind of health conditions would result in a feeling of extreme heat in the heart area?

January 1, 2011 - 11:01 am 2 Comments

ok..so i had an experience where i felt an extreme feeling of heat over my heart area in my chest. It was really localized here; as in i wasn’t really over-heated all over; just in my heart area. I have my spiritual theories but would like a medical one also.
What kind of condition could cause this and is it common. It really felt like my heart was ‘on fire’. Thanks in advance.

Its a very strange case. I have heard it first time. You must concern with any heart specialist who can better assist you.

Looking for a book which has all health conditions in?

December 29, 2010 - 12:34 am 1 Comment

Hello, is it possible to buy a book which contains all different illnesses and their symptoms?

For a layman, the best and easiest option might be Black’s Medical Dictionary. First published it 1906 it continues to be an excellent buy in my view. I got one when I first entered medical school and even though it is a bit dated it is still a useful book.

Can someone with existing conditions get health insurance under Obama’s universal health care plan?

December 25, 2010 - 8:24 pm 3 Comments

With the new regulation, can health insurance companies deny those with existing conditions from individual coverage?

Currently, privately owned insurance companies can deny coverage to anyone that they think will cost them money. This means that people with existing conditions can easily go broke paying for health care.

Under the Obama plan, these private companies would still not have to accept someone with existing conditions. However, a public option would be available to these people to help them get affordable health care.

So, the insurance industry would not change at all, but people who are not currently insured would be able to get health care without risking financial ruin.

Why Does Insurance Handle Mental Health Different From Other Health Conditions?

December 22, 2010 - 7:43 pm 5 Comments

For years most insurance coverages have treated mental heath care different than other types of heath care.
The copays are usually 80/20 for a person who deals with an ailment like diabetes.
The copay for someone who has clinical depression is usually 50/50.
I would believe the 1994 American with Disabilities Act would prohibit this.
Obviously not and it seems this is standard practice in the insurance industry.
Since each are medical conditions with a mortality risk, how can they (insurance) do this?

It’s actually in the process of being changed on the Federal level.

However, since most individuals in the US have their insurance through their employer, if the employer writes the policy themselves, and pays all the medical expenses out of their own check book, they get to make the rules. But even they must follow the Federal Guidelines.

Which is why you have limitations not only on Mental Health, but even Chiropractic/Physical Therapy. Even Preventative Care!

Why do I know this? I work in the healthcare insurance industry.

What health conditions or status a person may have if his/her RBCs are ruptured?

December 19, 2010 - 4:33 pm 1 Comment

I do not know if ruptured is the right term. the cell is not completely destroyed. it just have some breaks on its plasma membrane and those breaks are evident on a blood smear slide. i may email you the pictures. thank you.

in addtion, the subject has more lymphocytes (53%) than monocytes (35%). are there any connections with thse?

If the plasma membrane was ruptured, the cell would be broken. This would be called hemolysis, and if it causes anemia, it would be hemolytic anemia. The cell can have different shapes – sickled (sickle cell anemia), sphere (hereditary spherocytosis), etc.

Do you have the full differential, or just lymphocytes and monocytes? The monocyte value is very high. Think of how this might relate to damaged RBCs.
