Harvard Health Publications, a publishing division of Harvard Medical School, announces the launch of its redesigned and enhanced website to serve the needs of health-conscious consumers in search of trusted health care information. The new health.harvard.edu offers easy accessibility to the most current practical, authoritative health information, drawing on the expertise of the 8,000 faculty physicians at the Harvard Medical School and its world-famous affiliated hospitals.

Whether someone is suffering from a serious illness, has a chronic health condition, or just wants to know the best ways to stay healthy, we publish health newsletters, special health reports, books, and online health information that helps them find the answers they need,” said Komaroff.

anyone on a vegetable/fruit diet for health and wellness reasons?

February 2, 2011 - 8:38 am 1 Comment

your diet most likely also includes some protein, grains, etc. for other nutrients, but which fruits and veggies do you find the most beneficial to you health?

Fruits and vegies that are coloured a bright red, purple, blue, orange and yellow are the best because they are rich in antioxidants that slow down the aging process and reduce your likelihood of getting cancer.

They include tomatoes, strawberries, red capsicums, red beetroot, red cabbage, blueberries, bilberries, blue or purple grapes, pumpkin, corn (maize), oranges, carrots, lemons and others.

What are some harmful habits affecting health and wellness?

January 29, 2011 - 7:46 pm 3 Comments

Not including smoking, procrastiation, or getting sufficient rest.

One of the biggest factors for many is stress, no matter who you are your outlook on life tells it all.
Another is and always will be poor diet, healthy eating and regular everyday exercise will always make the difference between living badly and living well.

How can stress lead to serious health and wellness problems?

January 26, 2011 - 6:39 am 1 Comment

Stress raises blood pressure, which can damage various organs over time. It reduces resistance to diseases. It disrupts sleep patterns, which contributes to a host of problems. (now, where’s that Valium…)

What major should i go for,English or Health and wellness?

January 18, 2011 - 8:48 pm 5 Comments

Which one of these two majors do you think i would benefit more from career wise? Which one do you think pays more?

If you’re deciding only based on salary (which isn’t a great idea) and job outlook, then the medical field is the way to go. Not quite sure what careers the Health and Wellness major would prepare you for, but that’s something you should look into. See what most graduates of the program end up doing, where they go to work, and what their salaries are. If you ARE interested in the medical field, you might want to look into majors that have a more definitive career path, simply because there are plenty (nursing, radiology, ultrasound tech, dental hygiene, physical therapy, etc).

I personally think you should go with whichever major interests you more. I’ve learned first hand that going into the medical field for the money simply doesn’t work if you don’t have the passion for it. Life is too short to make a lot of money at a job you hate. If English interests you more, you can make it work for you.

Basically, the point of my answer is to not choose a career based on compensation. It’s good to look at job prospects, outlook, and pay, but money doesn’t buy happiness. If you have a passion/interest for something, you can be successful at it. No degree is useless, even if you have to try harder to make it work for you.

What jobs are available for individuals with a MA in health and wellness?

January 15, 2011 - 5:48 am 1 Comment

Perhaps a fitness instructor or personal trainer. I’m not sure if one would need additional certification(s) in order to work in either job. Health and wellness sounds like a very broad and general field. Perhaps exercise physiology albeit I’m sure more challenging and demanding would be more career-oriented. Perhaps you can also give lectures or workshops on healthy living with a MA in health and wellness.

Here is a website for general career info: www.bls.gov/oco and type into search ‘fitness instructor’, ‘personal trainer’, ‘exercise physiologist’ or ‘health educator’ or such.

Wellness/Health Topics?

January 11, 2011 - 12:24 pm 1 Comment

I am in the process of becoming a peer health educator for my school. We have to discuss some interesting health topics that we can present to students and maybe plan an event. If you were at school what health/wellness topics would you be interested in?

Doctors inform that there are three things everyone should keep in check throughoout their life for the prevention of numerous diseases and longevity: blood pressure, blood sugar and cholesterol. With proper diet, it’s possible to keep them under control without medication. For example drinking plenty of water helps lower blood sugar and when blood sugar is lowered, blood pressure decreases too. I suggest you focus on preventive medicine and get people to be more conscious of what they eat, how foods can help them eliminate health problems. Remember what Hippocrates has said:

"What you eat is your medicine, and your medicine is what you eat."

Please include garlic as a miracle food in your project. It is known to help fight a thousand diseases. It saved my life during bacteremia.
