Are we too quick to label our children with various mental health conditions?

September 29, 2010 - 11:39 am 7 Comments

Is this because mental health issues are more discussed in mainstream issues, or is it that adults want to use an excuse as a label for their children?

It certainly seems so. I cringe when I read in a newspaper about a child who has been diagnosed with bipolar or any sort of disorder. Thankfully it tends to be mostly confined to the US (research from the American Psychiatric Association is not always accepted by European Psychiatrists), as here in the UK and most of Europe, mental health services are reluctant to label adolescents with the exception of ADHD. Common sense dictates that teens are going through huge changes both physically and mentally and this doesn’t mean they have mental health problems. You just have to read some of the questions here on yahoo where young teens are asking do I have this condition etc etc? Why can’t we just let our kids grow up naturally and be a good parent(s) to them. It truly is a sad state of affairs.

How much does cardinal fitness cost for couples with the start up costs included?

September 29, 2010 - 11:39 am 2 Comments

My fiance and I wanted to join cardinal fitness in the midwest, does anyone know how much it costs?

$31.95 per month for the both of you. Normally there is a joining fee of $99 (first person) and $69 (second person). But if you tell them you saw it on their website, you can get the joining fee for $20 per person. A great deal because there is no long term commitment.

What is the definition of nutrition and structures in Science?

September 29, 2010 - 11:39 am 1 Comment

There’s a follow-up question after this: What is the comparison and contrast between the structures, nutrition and reproduction of the 5 kingdoms ( Monera, Protoctista, Fungi, Animalia, Plantae)?

Please reply A.S.A.P. Thanks for helping.

The five-kingdom classification of organisms
Nomenclature: Naming of organisms
Binomial: Biological name of an organism → Genus species
Taxon: Set of organisms within a category / Taxonomy / Study of biological classification
Different levels of taxons: SPECIES, GENUS, FAMILY, ORDER, CLASS, PHYLUM, KINGDOM
Most number of species on right
Most similar organisms on left
Unicellular: Single cell; Colonial: Groups of cells; Multicellular: Many cells
Autotrophs produce energy from inorganic sources
Phototrophs from photosynthesis/sunlight
Chemotrophs from simple inorganic (oxidative) processes
Heterotrophs digest and absorb organic molecules

Prokaryotae (prokaryotes)
Cell structure:
Prokaryotes, unicellular
Prokaryotes lack cytoplasmic organelles found in eukaryotes
Cell wall: murein
Nutrition: autotrophic (photosynthesis, chemosynthesis), aerobic heterotrophs
Divide by binary fission, not by mitosis
≈10μm in size (bacterial cell, filaments of blue-green bacteria)
Mutualistic nitrogen-fixing bacteria live in nodules on the root of legumes / symbiotic

Protoctista (protoctists)
Cell structure: eukaryotes, unicellular and multicellular
Cell wall: (sometimes) polysaccharide
Nutrition: autotrophic, heterotrophic
Placed in this category by exclusion / cannot be placed in any other kingdom
Slime moulds / fungi characteristics
Protozoa / heterotrophic and ingest food
Algae / photosynthesis
≈10μm (amoeba) – 1m (Laminaria / large brown alga)

Fungi
Cell structure: eukaryotes, multicellular and unicellular (yeast)
Cell wall: chitin
Nutrition: heterotrophic / saprotrophic decomposers or parasitic
Genus Penicillium
Body of a fungus is composed of thin filaments called hyphae / form a mycelium
Secret enzymes / external digestion / absorbs resulting nutrients
Erect hyphae that grow upwards from the mycelium carry their reproductive spores
Chains of spores on the erect hyphae / coloured mould visible on stored food
Break down organic matter

Plantae (plants)
Cell structure: only multicellular, eukaryotic; large vacuoles
Cell wall: cellulose
Nutrition: autotrophic (photosynthetic)
Growth is restricted to meristems (layers/patches of dividing cells)
Non-motile; adapted to land / strong tissues, leave gas exchange system, waterproofed
Eg mosses, ferns, conifers, angiosperms (flowering plants)

Plant kingdom has two different types of adults in their life cycle
Gametophytes, hidden in plant / sexual reproduction forms multicellular zygotes
Sporophytes, what we call plant / asexual reproduction to form spores that germinate into gametophytes
Gametophyte (n) → gamete (n) → fertilisation → zygote (2n) → mitosis → sporophyte (2n) → meiosis → spore (n) → mitosis → gametophyte (n)

Animalia (humans, animals)
Cell structure: eukaryotic, multicellular, no cell wall
Develop form a blastocyst / embryo
Have nervous and hormonal control systems
No cell wall!
Nutrition: heterotrophic, involving a digestive system
Are motile and grow throughout tissues (no mersitems)

Why do media like CNN talk so much about health and nutrition, but never cover drug use in schools?

September 29, 2010 - 11:39 am 3 Comments

Isn’t ILLIGAL drug addiction a very serious health problem? By our silence are we saying it is socially exceptable? Is the left leaning media covering up the depth of the problem? Why the silence?

You have watched very little outside of "entertainment" programming if you think the networks have ignored the problem of illicit drugs. Further, your comment "left leaning media" is absolutely meaningless. Lefties and liberals do not condone substance abuse any more than righties and fascists like the Bush administration. We all recognize how serious a problem substance abuse is.
There are, however, other problems just as serious and just as urgent. Malnutrition among school-aged children is one of them. Sex abuse of children by clergymen is another. Contamination of our water supplies and of our meats is another. So you tell me: shall we ignore the risk of mad cow disease and report exclusively on the dealing going down on the corner? Should we ignore increasingly threatening environmental degradation in favor of describing how your shlthead of a boyfriend does marijuana? Which problem shall we report and which shall we ignore?

Is getting a masters in health education lucrative or a waste of time?

September 29, 2010 - 11:39 am 4 Comments

I need to more about job outlooks for health educators. I read on the Internet that it is a booming career yet my friends and family tell me there are no jobs out there for health educators. What is the truth?

There are jobs, but your return on investment would not be great enough. There salaries paid would not justify putting a lot of money in getting a masters. Get masters in physical therapy or nursing.

Can you become a police officer with past mental health conditions?

September 25, 2010 - 9:01 am 3 Comments

About five years ago, I had been sent to an adolescent inpatient hospital. The main reason was for depression and self mutilation(only 3 superficial wounds). The total time spent at the inpatient unit was 5 days. The thing is that I was only 16 at the time and voluntarily admitted myself to the hospital, and haven’t been experiencing further mental health issues. I’d really like to become a police officer, but am worried something like this could disqualify me from applying. Are there any ways around this issue, like a waiver?

That’s a tough one they want a spot free record. Seeing that you voluntarily admitted yourself that would be in your favor. I really don’t know what to say, first things first though go to your doctor and get their approval if they can prove your free of this condition and there is no possibility of relapse that would also be in your favor. But don’t this for granted your state may be different. Depression may not be that big of a deal. I suggest either you talk to an officer at the department you want to work for this is also a chance to take a ride along which you should do if you haven’t already or contact the p.o.s.t council in your state and they’ll give you a definite answer.
